Suicide is often a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

An important goal of the federal government’s National Strategy for Suicide Prevention is to ensure community and clinical health care providers are trained in evidence-based suicide-specific assessments, management, and delivery of effective care.

Throughout the state of Alabama, suicide is the:

  • 3rd leading cause of death for ages 10-34

  • 4th leading cause of death for ages 35-44

  • 6th leading cause of death for ages 45-54

  • 11th leading cause of death for ages 55-64

  • 17th leading cause of death for ages 65+

  • Overall, suicide is the 12th leading cause of death in the state, and Alabama is ranked 25th in the nation for its suicide rate.

  • More than 2 times as many people died by suicide in 2019 than in alcohol related motor vehicle accidents.

75.9% of communities did not have enough mental health providers to serve residents in 2020, according to federal guidelines.
